OK
so this took a little longer than I intented, but I finally
made a slightly more Steam compliant version. This really just
fixes the launcher and a few options pages, but had to be done.
There
are two files linked below and on the files page. One is for
Steam users who need a new install of Judgement, the other is
for people who have an old copy of 1.3 that has been converted
by Steam and which is still using the default Half-life splash
screen.
It's
just occurred to me that I'm going to have to do a new release
to be Steam compliant. Doubt it will affect anyone since anyone
interested probably already has it installed (and it converts
over ok). Basically the shortcuts the installer creates are
useless for Steam installed Half-life. So watch this space...
No,
this isn't an alcohol induced halucination, we're really alive!
To
celebrate Christmas, we bring you the latest version of Judgement.
In this version we bring you a fair few inhancements, the best
(in my opinion) being:
New
'On Weapon' displays for some weapons. This is just the start
and future versions will use it on more weapons.
VGUI
Character Selection
Flashlight
on Scatter Gun now moves with the model animations!
Special
Christmas secrets which will appear over the Christmas period
Naturally
there are bug fixes and few other tweaks, but hey, they're not
the fun part. So Merry Christmas, and I hope to bring you more
goodies in the months to come.
Say
hi to two of the lovely ladies of the Germaine Greer Citi-def
squad.
Of course if you were to call them lovely ladies to their faces,
they'd rip you a new one for being a sexist pig ;)
It's
long been a part of the way that we develop Judgement that if
something looks wrong in the way HL does something, then we
try to replace it.
Our
latest bit of tweaking is that the flashlight no longer always
points straight ahead. This always looked kind of daft, especially
given that ours is attached to a shotgun, which definitely moves
around.
So
now the torch actually shines out of the front of the shotgun,
so when you lift the shotgun during the reload animation, the
torch light moves too! It sounds a really small change, but
it makes the torch seem so much more real. We've also coded
in seeing other peoples torches, something else that I always
wanted to see.
I'll
try to get some screenshots that do the effect justice (no pun
intended!) ...
I
saw on Planet Half-life this morning that there's a new mod
database site, so I thought I'd register Judgement. So now all
we need are fans to come and rate us and get others interested
in playing.
So
if you want to come and help get us up the charts, come and
rate us on our ModDB page.
It's
come to my attention that a few sound effects we use aren't
in the dedicated HL server install, or some of the 'other' HL
clients such as CS Retail.
Since
it's not a show stopper or something worth releasing a new version
for, I'll just make sure these files are included in our next
release when that happens.
If
you're desperate to know what sound files are missing then feel
free to mail me.

- Handy hints from the FLF guys - MoOg
I
saw this on Planet Halflife and thought I'd best mention it
as it's equally applicable to Judgement (and any mod in fact).
Make
sure you set your connection speed to the correct settings,
as apparently the default HL settings are for a 33.6 modem,
which obviously can cause a lot of lag. Even if you normally
connect via a third party server browser, such as one of the
Gamespy tools, it's a very good idea to pop into Half-lifes
built in server browser and selecting the correct speed before
you next play online.
For
those of you happy to edit your config.cfg, the relevent variable
is 'rate', which should be 3500 for a 56k modem, 5000 for DSL
and 9999 for broadband.
Another
handy variable to set is 'r_mmx' which apparently defaults to
0, but since nearly everything these days has MMX in it, it's
best to set this to 1.
We'll
be changing these defaults in future releases.

- New improved model rendering - MoOg
I'm
pretty sure this is a first in mods, but if not, it's still
a damn nice feature if you ask me....
We
now have special model features, such as working LEDs, on weapons
and even players.
This
means that just by looking at your Lawgiver you can see what
mode it's in, even in the dark!
We
intend to use this to bring more information into the weapon
models themselves, such as a heat gauge on the Stub gun and
a charge meter on the Disintegrator.
We
can also do transparent visors on helmets, glowing eyes on a
particularly nasty perp, in fact we could do pretty much what
we like with rendering effects now :)
Just
so happy to get it working that I thought I'd let the playing
public know :)
I'd
show you some screenshots but nothing really does it justice
seeing it in a non interactive way.
We've
just sorted out a new FGD which includes keys in various items
and weapons, which allow mappers to specify how many players
must be playing before an item is available. This should allow
mappers to balance the weapons in their maps better by preventing
the 'uber' weapons being available with too few people on.
We're
also working on a new set of icons so that we can make another
FGD for use with the new Hammer release (formerly Worldcraft
for those like me who didn't know).
I
forgot to mention this yesterday, but I noticed the Gamespy
Arcade filter for Judgement was declaring AHL server to be ours
by mistake. This has been corrected, so if you use GSA grab
the filter:
One
of our mappers pointed out a few minor keys missing from some
map entities in our fgd so we now have an updated one to be
downloaded. It's listed on our files page or you can just grab
it here:
I
just got mail from Fred at the MBL (Multi Bot Launcher) site
letting me know the latest version is out and that it's tested
just fine with our latest version. So if you're looking for
some bot action in any of your favourite mods, head over to
their site:
I'm
not sure if it's my machine or the code, but our official server
has been crashing pretty frequently today. Sorry about that,
and I'll be looking into the matter. Hopefully it's the machine,
as it's been doing the same with a lot of programs.
Heads
up! I've just finished making the installers for the new release
and so we'll be spending tomorrow double checking for glitches
and releasing it to you on Monday.
Right
now I'd say check back at about 10am GMT on Monday (5am EST)
and you'll probably see some links!
I
just got an email saying that since our mod was dead
would I like to give them all our code and models so other mod
makers can use them.
It
made me wonder just how many people know we're alive and how
many have stopped checking as they assume we're dead and gone.
So if you have a favourite set of forums you use, then tell
them we're alive and well and a new release is coming soon.
After
what has been a remarkably constructive few days, the latest
release is looking to be ready within the week. Obviously testing
may throw up something ugly, but here's hoping.
Much
like the last release, v1.2 will be more fixes and improvements
rather than any new gameplay modes. The list of changes/additions
includes:
More
stable bot code
New
proximity grenades
All
weapons now use clientside effects to reduce visible lag
Three
new maps (including the previously released jm_mutie)
Improved
damage decals and weapon effects
Minor
tweaks and touches to weapon behaviours
I
don't have an exact date or anything yet, but thought I'd give
you all warning that it's coming soon.
I'm
sure you're aware the old server has been down for a long, long
time.
Now as a temporary solution I'm running a part time server at
194.81.90.52:27015, but as it's part-time don't be surprised
if you can't always join it.
But
hopefully not on my own. After a brief discussion on the forums
we've decided to start tinkering with Judgement again. This
will be more of a 'as and when we feel like it' approach, so
don't expect constant updates or a rapid rate of development.
However,
what we've decided is to say to all you out there is "If
you think you can do better then please do". What we mean
is, if you're a budding modeller, skinner, sound artist, whatever,
and you think you can improve even one little bit of Judgement,
then please do and send it our way.
We
want to keep improving the mod and the more help we can get,
the better.
